Fort Benning Protest

The annual protest at Fort Benning began recently shortly after an October decision that will allow students to attend from an additional 11 countries, according to Army Times.

The “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,” (WHINSEC) formerly the School of the Americas (SOA, often referred to as “School of the Assassins”) trains soldiers from Latin Americans countries. The number of graduates each year is usually reportedly between 700 and 1,000, though in 2006 it was 1,200.

According to SOA Watch, many of its graduates use their training to kill people such as union organizers, educators, and others. A number of graduates have gone on to become military dictators.

The countries that are newly eligible to send students to WHINSEC are Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay.
