Iraq Death Tolls Rise

The number of Iraqi civilians who are killed each month is apparently rising, according to BBC News. This isn’t exactly hugely surprising but the rate at which it is rising is frightening. The Iraqi interior ministry says that 1,930 died last month, over three times the number from January 2006. The ministry’s numbers say that 12,000 Iraqi civilians were killed in 2006, though the actual figure is likely to be much higher, half of them in the last four months of the year.

Though the numbers are disputed, reporters say that the upward trend is clear in Iraq.

BBC says that there were 140 attacks reported daily in Iraq in 2006.
