Violence Against Civilians Growing in Iraq

In its annual report, Human Rights Watch said that violence against civilians has surged in Iraq, and abuse, torture, and killing of prisoners has also increased, according to Yahoo.

One study has said that 650,000 civilians have been killed as a result of the 2003 invasion.

During a series of checks from December 2005 to May 2006, inspectors “found consistent evidence of detainee abuse at most locations” after inspecting eight facilities in and around Baghdad. At Site 4, “many of the 1,845 detainees displayed recent injuries consistent with severe beatings and electric shock.” At Al-Jadiriyya facility in Baghdad in November 2005, investigators “discovered some 170 detainees, many bearing injuries consistent with torture. At least 18 others allegedly had died in custody, and the fate of others remained unknown.”
