1,000 Dead in Mogadishu Battles

It is estimated that 1,000 people have been killed in battles in the Ethiopian capital, according to BBC News, and 4,000 injured. Also, the UN says 124,000 people have left the city.

Eritrea says that Islamist leader Sheikh Sharif Ahmed has held talks with President Isaias Afewerki in Asmara, though having previously denied connection to the Islamists. Eritrea is described by BBC as “Ethiopia’s regional rival.”

Battles in Somalia Kill 381

The last four days of fighting in Somalia have left 381 dead and 565 wounded, according to Reuters. The government has advised civilians to leave their homes because the government may target where they live at any time. Salad Ali Jelle, the deputy defense minister, says that the government does not recognize the ceasefire negotiated between the Ethiopian military and clan elders.

Mortars in Somalia Kill Two

Insurgents attacking Mogadishu killed at least two civilians, according to Yahoo, and injured 16 or more. Four separate mortar attacks were launched against the capital.

UN delegates met in Baidoa (about 155 miles southwest of Mogadishu) to discuss sending UN peacekeepers to Somalia.

Blast in Somalia Kills Seven

16 March 2007

A bomb blast on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Somalia, killed a family of seven, according to BBC News, among them four children. The family was among the 40,000 who have left the capital since February, and were in the village of Afgoye.

Deputy Defence Minister Salad Ali Jelle says that 4,000 newly-trained soldiers will pacify the city in the next month.

Two Civilians Killed in Somalia Crossfire

13 March 2007

Two civilians were killed in clashes between Ethiopian forces and insurgents, according to the Associated Press. Roughly 20 insurgents battled with the government forces, who were protecting a military base. The battle lasted fifteen minutes, then the insurgents disappeared.

One woman was killed while in a truck, and thirteen-year-old boy sitting in front of his house was shot in the head and killed.

15 Civilians Dead in Somalia

Government and Ethiopian forces’ battles with insurgents yesterday have left 15 civilians dead in Mogadishu, according to the AP. Among the dead were a pregnant woman and a 4-year-old boy. A 12-year-old girl among the 45 injured had to have both her legs amputated.

Bombs in Somalia Kill Four

16 February 2007

Fighting in Somalia killed at least four people yesterday and wounded 17, according to the Associated Press. A mortar shell that hit near a market in Mogadishu killed three and wounded five. Another shell hit a beach where a group of children were swimming, killing one and wounding six others.

Three other shells fell in the Hodan district and wounded six.

Somalia Peacekeeping

Ethiopia says that it wants to leave Somalia by the end of the month, according to BBC News. Regional diplomats are trying to put together a peacekeeping force of 8,000 to replace what is described as a potential power vacuum.

So far, Uganda has agreed to provide peacekeepers. Also, Ethiopia, Kenya, and several other unnamed countries have also said they would. South Africa and Tanzania both say that it is too early to decide.

193 Killed at Protest

193 people were killed by security forces while protesting election fraud last year, according to ABC News, three times the official death toll. The victims were either shot, beaten, or strangled to death.

More than half of Ethiopia’s population of 77 million lives on a dollar a day.
